GUATEMALA: Colom seizes early initiative

The line-up for this November's presidential elections is starting to take shape. The early frontrunner is Alvaro Colom, who lost the run-off to President Oscar Berger in 2002. Berger's ruling Gran Alianza National (Gana) has finally sorted itself out after December's primary-election debacle: Eduardo Giammattei, the former director of the state prison system, will stand. Worth keeping an eye on is Harold Caballeros. An evangelical priest with a nationwide following, Caballeros is a dark horse.
